Construction work in central London presents a unique challenge. Sites are often surrounded by historic buildings, narrow pavements, heavy footfall, and strict planning controls. In conservation areas especially, developers are under pressure to minimise visual disruption while maintaining safety and progress on site. Project Print Management was recently appointed to deliver what became our largest scaffold wrap installation of the year, covering close to 1,000 square metres on Wigmore Street, London. The project required not only high-quality large-format printing, but also precise coordination with scaffold designers, structural engineers, and surveyors — all while working within tight urban constraints.

The Printed Scaffold wrap on Wigmore Street Project: Scale and Complexity
This particular project on Wigmore Street was significant in both size and complexity. The total printed area was just under 1,000m², making it the largest Printed Scaffold wrap Project Print Management has delivered this year.
Key project details included:
- Five individual mesh banners
- Each banner measuring approximately 15 metres high
- Coverage across seven separate elevations
- Installation directly adjacent to a busy public pavement
The building itself was undergoing extensive works, and the scaffolding design was far from straightforward. Multiple elevations, variable heights, and ongoing structural monitoring added layers of complexity that required careful planning from the outset.
Digitally Printed Mesh PVC: The Material of Choice
For large scaffold wraps, material choice is critical. We digitally printed this project onto PVC mesh, a specialist material designed specifically for scaffolding applications.
Mesh PVC offers several advantages:
- Reduced wind load compared to solid PVC
- Lightweight but strong enough for large spans
- Excellent print quality at scale
- Allows light and air to pass through
For this project, the mesh was printed in sections over five banners, which were later installed seamlessly to appear as one continuous façade.
Invisible Fixing System: A Cleaner Finish for the Printed Scaffold wrap
One of the defining features of this Printed Scaffold wrap was the invisible fixing method used during installation.
Rather than fixing banners directly to standard scaffolding tubes with visible ties or bungee cords, a secondary sub-frame was constructed. This frame was made using standard scaffold poles fixed with Allen key fittings, creating a smooth, uninterrupted surface.
This approach allowed the mesh banner to be stretched tightly around the frame, producing a clean, architectural finish with no visible fixings. From street level, the wrap appeared flat, controlled, and intentional — exactly what is required in sensitive urban locations.
While this method delivered an excellent visual result, it did require additional work from the scaffolding contractor, highlighting the importance of early collaboration between all parties involved.
Structural Monitoring: Designing Around Survey Requirements
One of the most technically demanding aspects of this project was the requirement for weekly structural monitoring of the building.
Surveyors needed to carry out regular laser measurements from ground level to ensure the structure was not moving during construction. This meant the Printed Scaffold wrap could not simply be installed as a continuous surface.
Instead, 20 survey access points had to be incorporated into the mesh banners.
Precision Planning Was Essential
These survey holes could not be cut on site. Once printed and installed, mesh banners cannot be modified without compromising their integrity. As a result, every opening had to be planned and manufactured in advance.
To achieve this:
- A detailed site survey was conducted
- Exact coordinates were mapped into the artwork
- Survey positions were cross-checked with engineers
- Openings were fabricated during banner production
Although the laser survey only required a narrow opening of approximately 5mm, we manufactured each aperture at 400mm x 400mm. This provided flexibility during installation and ensured alignment tolerance without affecting the visual impact of the wrap.
Once installed, the access points blended discreetly into the design, allowing surveyors to carry out their work without removing or damaging the scaffold wrap.
Early Starts and Urban Logistics
Installing a Printed Scaffold wrap on Wigmore Street required careful timing. The scaffold line ran directly along the pavement edge, meaning pedestrian flow and traffic management were major considerations.
To minimise disruption, the installation team began work at 5am. By 8am, Wigmore Street becomes extremely busy, and working at height over public walkways is no longer feasible.
The installation involved:
- Six specialist rope-access riggers
- Coordinated lifting of large mesh banners
- Close supervision and safety management
- Continuous communication with site management
Despite the scale and complexity of the project, the full installation was completed in two days.
Managing Delays and Expectations
Due to the complexity of the scaffolding design and the additional requirements for invisible fixings and survey access, the project did experience some delays prior to installation. However, these were unavoidable given the technical demands of the site.
Clear communication with the client and developer ensured expectations were managed throughout. By the time installation began, all parties understood the constraints and the reasoning behind each design decision.
The result was a smooth installation phase and a final outcome that exceeded expectations.
The Finished Result of the Printed Scaffold wrap
Once installed, the Printed Scaffold wrap completely transformed the appearance of the site. All visible construction activity was concealed, creating a calm, uniform façade that sat comfortably within its conservation-area surroundings.
From street level, the wrap presented a controlled, professional appearance that significantly improved the pedestrian experience. For the developer, it demonstrated sensitivity to the location and commitment to high standards throughout the build process.
Both the end client and the developer were extremely pleased with the final result, particularly given the scale and technical complexity involved.
